How Chhath Puja Celebreate

Chatth is a four day festival, and all the rituals of this festival are performed on the
river bank or in some water body. On the first day, devotees take bath in the holy
water of Ganges and consume meal only one time in a day.
The meal is called
“kaddu-bhat”and is cooked in clay utensils using mango wood fire over clay stoves.
On the second day, the devotees observe fast until evening, after which they
worship the Sun God and then eat Prasad which consist of rasoi-kheer, puris and
fruits. From then on the devotees observe fast for the next thirty six hours. On the
third day of Chatth Puja, devotees go to the riverbanks or other water bodies to
perform Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings).
The ‘Arghya’ or offerings are kept in
a ‘Dauri’ - is a basket made of bamboos. The offerings comprises of Thekua, Puri,
coconut, and other different fruits. After the Sandhya Arghya, the devotees celebrate
Kosia Bharai, i.e. lighting clay lamps under five sugarcane sticks while singing folk
songs of Chhathi Maiya. On the fourth day, devotees along with their families
gather at a riverside to offer Bhowra Arghya (morning offerings) and break their
fast with Prasad.
